Vancouver’s vibrant arts scene is about to get a major addition. This month, celebrated artist Yared Nigussu invites the public to the grand opening of his new creative home, Lab Studio Gallery, located in the heart of the historic Gastown/Chinatown district.
Whether you are a longtime collector or a curious newcomer to the local art scene, this two-day open house offers a rare opportunity to step inside the world of one of Canada’s most compelling contemporary painters.
The Event: Open House Weekend
Join us for a weekend of art, conversation, and community. The Lab Studio Gallery will be opening its doors to showcase Nigussu’s latest works in an intimate, professional studio setting.

About the Artist: Yared Nigussu
Originally from Ethiopia, Yared Nigussu’s journey to Vancouver took him through France, where he honed his craft before making British Columbia his permanent home. Since arriving in Canada, he has become a fixture of the local art community, winning the “RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award” and gaining international recognition for his high-energy, expressionist style.
Nigussu is best known for his large-scale portraits and urban landscapes. His work is defined by:
- Vibrant Movement: Using a bold palette and vigorous brushwork to capture the “soul” of his subjects.
- Texture and Depth: Layers of paint that create a tactile, three-dimensional experience on the canvas.
- Human Connection: A focus on the emotional complexity of the human face and the frantic energy of city life.
His new studio on Columbia Street serves as both a workspace and a gallery, allowing visitors to see where the magic happens and engage directly with the art in the environment where it was created.
