About

Yared Nigussu grew up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and graduated in 2005 from Addis Ababa University of Fine Arts and Design with a degree in Art and Education, majoring in painting. He later received a scholarship to France, where he studied art and the French language, and began establishing his career by exhibiting his work in France and Austria. Early in his artistic life, Yared was deeply influenced by Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, particularly his belief that understanding the soul reveals the truth in a subject’s eyes; today, nearly a century later, Yared draws much of his inspiration from faces, noting that eyes can conceal countless stories and provide an infinite source of creativity. His work fuses expressive brushstrokes with mixed media and a bright, opulent palette, using paint drippings, dense dashes of vivid color, and contrasting imagery to create portraits that are provocative, narrative-driven, and deeply sensorial. After moving to Canada in 2009, Yared found new inspiration in the energy, light, and urban perspective of Vancouver, where he went on to win Canada’s National Art Battle live competition three consecutive times from 2011 to 2014, along with receiving the 2015 Sage Award of Social Acceptance and Great Excellence and the 2015 Bikila Professional Excellence Award. Today, Yared Nigussu’s work is exhibited and collected internationally, and in 2018 he launched ART LAB – STUDIO, his own gallery and creative hub dedicated to promoting art and culture in Vancouver.
